About FEES
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a valid and reliable instrumental assessment of swallowing function performed at the bedside or clinic using a flexible endoscope.
FEES vs. MBSS
FEES complements the Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS). FEES provides direct visualization of pharyngeal and laryngeal structures, secretion management, and airway protection across real foods and liquids without radiation exposure.
Procedure
- Brief nasal endoscopy with the scope positioned above the epiglottis
- Baseline exam of anatomy, movement, and secretions
- Systematic trials across consistencies and volumes
- Assessment of airway protection, residue, and sensation
Indications
- Suspected dysphagia impacting safety or efficiency
- Need to assess secretion management and airway protection
- Repeatable, radiation-free follow up and biofeedback
